Traveling with a mission:
Discover South Africa's Ancestral Journeys
Between roughly 1790 and 1860, this route was the heyday of north-south travel, from the Cape to Kuruman and into Africa. Later, the north-south routes in the Eastern Cape and Free State became more important.

Many early travelers recorded their experiences in journals and diaries, and many sketched what they saw.
On this route, several cultural groups met and intermingled, learning from each other, trading, and even intermarrying.

This Route explores and celebrates the encounters between the trekboers, missionaries, Khoi, San ("bushmen" or !Xam), Korana, Griqua, Tswana, and even Xhosa outposts.
Frontiers, old and new
Today, South Africa has new frontiers to explore. In many communities on the Route, innovative conservation and development projects are taking place.

Like the era of the Forgotten Highway Route, communities encounter each other in new ways, celebrating and exploring the equality and freedoms of the post-apartheid era.

Research and support continue in the communities, while we develop the Route.
